WHY IS A SMARTPHONE GOOD FOR OUR HEALTH?

"We carry all the answers in our hearts," was the advice heard many times, but in the year 2021 it is increasingly moving away from reality. Nowadays, we literally carry all the answers in the palm of our hands.
People access the Internet through their smartphones, and when searching for answers, no search engine question has any limits.
This also applies to demanding medical questions and diagnostics.

Exponential growth of applications

In the last five years, it has been almost impossible to effectively monitor the growth of mobile health applications, as their number is increasing rapidly. According to Evidence and Impact on Human Health and the Healthcare System Institute Report, it was in the year 2018 active more than 318.000 of mobile applications, and every day it was in development at least 200 new ones. We can assume that this number increased even more at the onset of the pandemic.

We know 2 types of applications

FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) separates two types of apps: wellness and health apps.

- Health apps allow patients to track symptoms, diagnose or offer solutions.
- Wellness apps improve the quality and well-being of each individual.

What are people actually looking for on health websites and apps?

1. Functionality: easy to use

Patients are looking for a useful application that allows them to quickly order, change an appointment or cancel a medical examination.

2. Accessibility: clear information for all users

Web pages and any applications must provide useful information to all users. Patients typically use apps to search for diagnostics, causes, and explore symptoms. It is important, however, that website developers do not neglect accessibility for people with special needs.

3. Access to Professional Consultation

According to the AMJC (The American Journal of Managed Care), studies show that nearly 75% of emergency room physicians could receive care over the phone or video. Many ED visits are basic and do not require live treatment.

4. Community

Many patients who are mainly dealing with chronic diseases often look for their fellow sufferers - people who are facing the same problems - and offer them advice that can make their lives easier.

Digitalization of healthcare is not helped not only patients but also doctors. According to research published in IT HealthNews, the percentage of young doctors who want to leave their studies and work in medicine during their specialization has significantly decreased (from 25% to 9%). Digitization and the resulting more organized systems on websites and their applications allow them to organize their work easier, get more well-deserved sleep and, as a result, less work-related stress.
